Already, it’s been one year since Nerdgasm was published. Nerdgasm, in case you missed it, is my debut novel, and my first contribution to the Hearth and Forge world that Misty Carlisle, Becca Patterson, Sammie Maxwell and I write in.
January 15th is an important date to me. It’s the day my grandparents got married before a Navy Chaplain in 1945. Grandma passed away on January 7th, 2010, 8 days shy of their 65th anniversary. Grandpa lasted until November 2nd of 2010. I don’t say any of this for sympathy, only to bring to light the quiet, understated love they had for each other for 66 years. They never bickered, they simply saw problems as they came up, and they talked them out. There was no drama, no tears, no major fights that nearly broke them apart. They took the time to listen to each other and help out when the other needed it.
The general principal of communication and real respect for each other had always been what I wanted to base Judy & Max’s relationship on in Nerdgasm, and when I missed my initial deadline of Black Friday for release, and then Christmas, I went right to January 15th. There was no better day, in my mind, to release a book filled with so much love and respect than on the anniversary of the day my grandparents married, nearly 75 years ago.
I miss my grandparents every day, and it’s rare that I don’t think of them, even after nine years. There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t think about what I learned from them, and the stories I wish they’d had more time to tell, and never asking Grandpa to teach me to speak Swedish or play piano.
So happy anniversary, Grandma & Grandpa, and also, happy birthday, Nerdgasm!
