June Progress

Well, what do you know? We’re halfway through June already. Pride is in full swing. Juneteenth is upon us. Radical things are in the air.

Such radical things as actually writing In Due Time. Well re-writing it and making it stronger. I’m making the story hit harder and soar higher. At least that’s what it’s doing to me.

This is not an easy story to write. Why would I write the easy ones? The easy ones are where everyone is happy and things are going well. That stuff’s easy to write and boring as hell to read. Who wants to read about everything being peachy? Living that way is great, but writing not so much.

I don’t ever want to be a main character.

I really don’t ever want to end up in a situation like Puck and Breezy. Well, I’d love to love someone that deeply. I just don’t want to go through what they’ve gone through so far. And I know what more they are going to have to face in future stories.

 

Anyway, I’ve been keeping up with the edits and should have In Due Time ready for publication when Becca gets A New Romance ready. She’s got more to do on that one – it’s a full fledged novel after all.

May Progress Report

It’s May, 2019. To be frank, the world isn’t anything like I thought it would be at this time.

 

I know, I know. I’m suppose to be talking about my writing. Specifically you want to know how Puck and Breezy are doing. They’re struggling. Not because I’m an Evil Author God (™), but because I’m struggling. I’m finding it difficult to concentrate on In Due Time or anything else I could be working on because life is being a total pain in the ass.

 

Look, I know we authors aren’t supposed to talk about politics and such because we might have a different opinion than one of our readers. Frankly, I think that’s a load of crap. Real talk here – everything I write is infused with my politics. I make choices about who my characters are, what they wear, who they kiss, everything, based on my worldview (politics). I figure, if you can’t handle my politics out here, you aren’t going to like them in there, either.

 

We’re living in a dumpster fire. Don’t roast marshmallows over a dumpster fire. There’s nasty shit in there and it doesn’t get less nasty when it gets turned into smoke. It’s become impossible to miss the fact that old white dudes who have gerrymandered their way into power are waging a war on women (and brown people). Conservative states are racing to the bottom by passing abortion bans that make no sense. They claim it’s because they hold all life sacred, but they’re putting the lives of women at risk and mandating medical procedures that don’t exist.

 

Normally, I process this kind of existential dread through my writing. This shit, I just can’t. Puck and Breezy don’t have sex with men. There’s no chance for them to run into these problems. I mean Puck isn’t capable of being pregnant (can you imagine how over run the world would be if immortal fairies could have babies?). I don’t have any other characters I can throw at this either.

 

Besides all that, I feel the need to face this in the real world. It’s not enough for me to understand. I can’t think it through and come to terms with it. Lives, real world lives, are at stake. So I haven’t made as much progress as I should with In Due Time because I’ve been working on editing the real world.

April Progress

It’s April, and a case of the lates is going around the Hearth and Forge. Becca has a lot going on, Milli’s got her new job. Me… I don’t have an excuse. I just plain forgot. I mean life is hitting pretty hard at everyone these days. Sammie, we’re counting on you to get us back on track.

 

So, what have I been up to?

 

Mostly trying to edit In Due Time. This is a hard one. Not because of the language or anything like that. It’s just… OH DEAR GODS WHAT HAVE I DONE TO MY DEAR SWEET PUCK AND BREEZY? I have to keep reminding myself that I am a member of the Evil Author Gods Association, and it’s required that I do mean things to my characters. (I mean, stories where everything is sunshine and roses are kind of boring).

 

Anyway, that’s pretty much it. I’ve spent my days staring at the story and playing Sims.

March Progress Report

It’s March Madness – in one of its many forms. I’ve finally put the last words into this draft of God of Mischief and have started looking through In Due Time. That’s pretty mad, right there.

 

Alright, I know I really should be further along than that, but life has been getting in the way. I don’t want to sound like I’m whining, but with transportation still an issue and income not coming in, I’m spending too much of my time worrying about things that are not writing. It’s just a sad fact of the writing life. I’d love it if I could devote all my mental energy to getting these stories out into the world, but that’s just not the way that it works.

 

I should be spending more time than I am reminding people that I have stories that are already published so they can buy and read those. I should be spending more time making sure that the covers for my stories are the best they can be. I should be spending even more time writing/editing the next one. Instead I’m filling out applications for aid and begging people to please just drop a few dollars in my tip jar. I’m spending just the right amount of time filling out applications for day jobs – but if I get one of those I’ll lose hours of creative time, but hopefully gain back energy I can spend creatively.

 

All in all, I can wish that things were different, but the important thing is that progress is being made.

February Progress

February, the month of love. It should be the best month for a romance author, right? Not really. It’s also the month of Jack Frost and let me tell you he’s putting his foot down around here. So I’ve been dealing with a whole lot of cold and snow. Two and a half feet of new snow, just to be clear.We know that because by the end of January all the (two inches) of snow had melted. So yeah, I’ve spent more time than I’d like shoveling the snow and shivering.

 

That said, things are heating up a bit with Puck and Breezy. I know I should be editing In Due Time, but they want to tell me about God of Mischief. So, when I’m not too cold to type, I’ve been writing about the time that Breezy actually got one over on Brigid. This could be interesting.

 

I’ll be honest, I’m just not in the mood to deal with the issues brought up in In Due Time. It’s a bit heavy. I mean, sometimes as an author you just have to be so mean to your characters. Stories don’t come from the times that everything goes according to plan. A vacation that goes according to plan is good, fun, and relaxing, but the one where everything that can go wrong does gets talked about for years. The same is true for our characters. In Due Time is a tale of things that don’t go according to plan. It’s a story where consequences come home to roost. It’s full of those kinds of feels.

 

God of Mischief on the other hand is a story about dealing with the consequences. It’s after the plans have gone to shit and our lovely tricksters get to figure out how to move forward. A fairy and her lover have plenty of options. It’s not all sun and roses, but it’s a lot lighter.

 

So for all you Puck and Breezy fans, you can safely pick up In Due Time when it comes out with the knowledge that God of Mischief is also on it’s way. Assuming the polar vortex eventually lifts and I don’t freeze solid.

January Progress Report

Hey folks. So I’ve been really bad about blogging lately, for reasons.

 

I promise I had reasons.

 

The main reason is: I was pouring everything into Patreon, but since we weren’t doing so well at getting people to join us there, we decided to send our progress reports back out to our blogs.

 

We aren’t giving up on Patreon. You can still support us there, but we need a way to reach out to people who aren’t already there, so that’s here.

 

To that end, here’s what I’ve been up to.

 

I’ve been doing a lot with Breezy and Puck. Those two cuties have a whole lot of story left in them. You didn’t really think that a human and fairy would get to their happily ever after so quickly, did you? I mean, there’s the curse Oberon hurled right at the end just to start with. Not to mention a pair of tricksters are going to get up to a whole lotta trouble.

 

Look for In Due Time soonish (I have to wait for Becca to publish A New Romance first – which you’ll understand when you read them). I can’t wait too long though because Milli is chomping at the bit with Ain’t No Angel.

 

Following that I’ve already started work on God of Mischief. I don’t have much to say about that because it’s still really early in the process.

 

Outside of Hearth and Forge, I’ve been working on finding one of those “day job” things. I’ve heard that they’re a pain in the ass, but they help with paying the bills.
